DIALLING IT UP OR DOWN?

Many luxury watch brands offer his & hers models, but which one is for you?

For couples looking to exchange luxurious yet useful wedding gifts with style and longevity, classic timepieces can be the ideal choice. Many luxury watch brands offer his and hers models, which follow the same design but in different sizes or finishes to suit the wearer.

The best choice of brand and timepiece for you depends of course on your budget, as well as your personal style. His and hers models tend to be classic designs, which makes them easier to create in larger and smaller sizes. They’re intended for many years of wear, with quality components and materials. We recommend starting your search with these brands:

Rolex

For many people, a Rolex is the definition of a ‘luxury watch’. The brand has a reputation for timeless (no pun intended!) designs and excellent craftsmanship. Since the business was founded in 1905, Rolex watches have adorned the wrists of famous explorers, actors, sportsmen and politicians. They tend to hold their value, so a Rolex watch is a sound investment.

Many of Rolex’s watches are designed for men, however, there are plenty of options for a matching his and hers pairing.  The Yacht-Master is one example of this; a sporty model with a slimmer version for women. You could opt for different finishes in the same design, as you have a choice of a flex or link-chain bracelet, in steel, gold or platinum, or even two-tone options.

Longines

If your budget doesn’t stretch to Rolex, you might want to consider a watch pairing from Longines. It may not have the cachet of Rolex, but the brand has a long history (it dates back to 1832) and a reputation for Swiss watchmaking excellence. Their designs are classic and elegant, and have a global and unisex appeal.

The Longines Master collection offers a variety of his and hers watches, with a common design but options to vary the size, bracelet and finish according to the preference of each wearer.

Cartier

A French jewellery house, Cartier’s collections exude effortless elegance, sophistication and luxury. The company was founded in 1847 and is now one of the most prestigious jewellery brands in the world, and first choice of the wealthy and even royalty. Cartier watches are handmade, with exceptional attention to detail.

Couples have a number of choices, including the iconic Santos collection. The first Santos watch was designed in 1906 and is commonly accepted to be the earliest example of a wristwatch.  The Tank collection offers another simple and classic design, with a range of sizes and bracelets.

Patek Philippe

Patek Philippe remains a family-owned business, and is still based in Geneva, Switzerland, where it began in 1839. The entry price of a Patek Philippe timepiece is around US$20,000, and that’s due to the artisanal approach to watchmaking that the brand has retained through its history.

Every watch they produce is catalogued, and they’re able to restore any watch they’ve made, no matter the age. These are true investment pieces. The Calatrava collection features matching his and hers watches, or for a sportier option there’s the Nautlius range.

Chanel

If you’d like a contemporary style, with the option of a more decorative ladies watch, then look to Chanel. The French fashion house is of course widely known for fashion, fragrance and even other jewellery, but perhaps less so for its watches.

You have less choice here, with the J12 being the principle option with his and hers designs. There’s a matt black or grey option for men, and a popular white ceramic ladies version. The face of the J12-20 ladies watch has a rhodium-plated playful motif, for a youthful choice.
